Reading reach vs. saves (and which one to trust)

Reach tells you how many people saw a post. Saves (or on some platforms, shares/bookmarks) tell you how many people thought it was worth keeping or sending to someone else. These measure different things, and mixing them up leads to bad decisions.

When reach is the number that matters

If your goal is awareness — more people knowing the brand exists — reach and impressions are the right numbers to watch, especially for a launch or a one-off announcement.

When saves matter more

If your goal is building a loyal, returning audience, saves and comments matter more than reach. A post that reaches 50,000 people but gets 12 saves is being scrolled past. A post that reaches 4,000 people but gets 200 saves is being actively valued — those are the people who'll remember you exist next week.

A concrete example

A recipe-style post from a small bakery got 60,000 reach (thanks to a platform push) but only 40 saves — mostly casual scrollers, not future customers. A 'how we make our sourdough starter' post got 5,500 reach but 310 saves — people who plan to come back to it, likely more engaged. If you had to make one more post like either, the second is the safer bet for building repeat visits, even with lower reach.

Rule of thumb: use reach to judge whether your reach is growing month over month, and use saves/comments to judge whether a specific piece of content is worth repeating.
