Choosing 2 platforms instead of spreading across 6
A common mistake: a small business owner or new freelancer feels they need to be on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, Pinterest and X all at once. In practice, most small brands do better posting consistently to 2 platforms than sporadically to 6.
How to pick the two
·Where is the audience already, based on your audit — which platform had the most engaged existing followers?
·What content do you already have or can realistically make weekly — video-heavy brands lean TikTok/Instagram Reels, text/opinion-heavy brands lean LinkedIn/X
·Where do your actual customers search — a gym looks different from a B2B accounting firm
Example: a two-location gym with lots of workout footage but almost no existing LinkedIn presence should pick Instagram and TikTok, not add LinkedIn because 'it seems professional.' A B2B software consultant with client testimonials and no video budget should pick LinkedIn and maybe X, not force Reels they can't sustain.
The third platform trap
It's tempting to add a third platform once the first two feel easy. Resist it for at least 8–10 weeks. Adding a platform before your cadence on the first two is solid just spreads the same time thinner and you lose the consistency you built.
